When I was a teenager I hated science fiction. I can not explain today why I could not get close to a book that captured the imagination and the imagination of many people, as well as the writer che l’aveva pensato. Fu così che, quando arrivò in Italia il suo libro «Contact» (già custodivo gelosamente «Cosmo» in cassetta e in forma cartacea), mi dissi che uno strappo alla regola l’avrei potuto fare: la fantascienza raccontata dal mio astronomo preferito mi sarebbe sicuramente piaciuta.
Lo lessi d’un fiato. Potete capire che la sorpresa fu enorme quando mi accorsi che non c’era un protagonista, ma una protagonista, per di più astronoma, Eleanor Arroway, Direttrice del Progetto Argus, un sistema di 131 radiotelescopi che si snodavano per diversi chilometri nel deserto del New Mexico, uno dei posti più belli che avrei voluto visitare. Per anni, sulla mia scrivania sistemai un foglietto di carta con la stessa citazione che Eleanor teneva sulla sua. Era tratta dalle «Metamorfosi» di Franz Kafka:

Quante volte questa frase mi ha dato stimolo a continuare con gli esami, anche quelli più difficili, durante il corso di laurea: sognavo quei radiotelescopi along the endless desert expanses that moved in search of radio signals from outer space ... And I was there.
