reading the various posts on this blog I realized that almost all had included quotations or reported typical people's reactions to the news of their profession, so I thought I'd start with just one of the most common ... Yes, because once past the first questions "do a horoscope?" or "but then work at night?" (which remains always my favorite because it gives rise to many sarcastic responses) that's where you go to parry, directly to the stars. I work in campo dell'ottica adattiva da poco più di un anno, cioè da quando mi sono laureata qui a Padova. Per me le stelle più piccole sono, meglio è, in un certo senso! Il nostro è un gruppo di tecnologi (nel senso lato del termine), quelli a cui si vanno a chiedere i consigli sulle questioni più strane, perché se è vero che la gente comune non ha chiaro di cosa si occupi un astronomo, non è che tutti gli astronomi teorici abbiano chiaro il compito e le competenze di chi lavora nel campo tecnologico... e trovo questa cosa molto divertente, fra l'altro!
L'astronomia non era la mia passione da bambina, non volevo fare l'astronauta e non sono mai stata astrofila, the choice of the course to be taken was completely random and even the way now that I have undertaken has been the result of a decision "cast", so I can not say that I realized the dream of a lifetime, but never in life would thought that work could be so stimulating.
I am fortunate to be part of a group that participates in the implementation, from design to final optical alignment until first light, instruments that are fitted to the largest telescopes in the world ... me that I still have 25 years, this is an honor beyond description! And I can not deny that it is very lucky, because not everyone of being in the right place at the right time. What struck me most is the constant interaction with colleagues from all over the world, perhaps many of you now is natural, but go directly from the close of the degree course at various collaborations was totally unexpected!
The technology sector, then, is particularly suited to this collaboration, we can say that it is almost forced in a way. This is because projects of a certain magnitude are extremely complex and can not be the result of a single mind, but they require the efforts of many individuals who make available to the project their different skills and experiences to achieve a common goal, just as in a team ... I am 14 years of practice a team sport that is my passion and I can assure you that the similarities are many and the similarity is amazing! Maybe that's what I like most, more travel, more than the pleasure of discovery ... I LOVE being in a team! ... And I love what engages me mentally, and that leads me to reconsider what may be my limitations and my mental closures.
The result is an environment in which people work together with different skills and knowledge (optics, astronomy, mechanical engineers and computer, etc ...) and where there is a continuous exchange of views and experiences, che avviene a distanza, giornalmente, o di persona, periodicamente. Ma la cosa più toccante (addirittura!) è che ogni persona ha la possibilità di dire la sua, magari sbagliando per inesperienza o ingenuità, ma è raro che un'idea, quale che sia la sua origine, venga scartata a priori.
Forse con il passare del tempo questo entusiasmo passerà perché ci farò l'abitudine o perché prima o poi potrà capitarmi anche qualche esperienza meno piacevole, ma spero che ciò che conterà non sarà mai solo vincere, ma continuare a partecipare mettendoci sempre tutta me stessa.
